A white drake standing on brown linen, painted in 1895 by a man who worked entirely from memory.

Joseph Crawhall would study an animal for as long as it took, then go back to the studio and paint it slowly with the bird nowhere in sight. He worked on brown Holland linen and let the warm woven ground do half the work — the drake is as much unpainted cloth as it is white paint. He destroyed anything that fell short of his own standard, which is why so little survives.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
