A surgeon in a red coat on the links at Leith, club in hand, caddie behind him, and the Firth of Forth going grey in the distance. The golf is real and so is the dress: the red coat was the uniform of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, which drew up the first written rules of the game in 1744.

William Inglis was Captain of the Company in the 1780s, and David Allan painted him on their home ground. Allan, born in Alloa in 1744, had spent a decade in Rome and came home to become the sharpest recorder of Scottish life in his century. This is one of the earliest full portraits of a golfer anywhere, and it still hangs in the city whose links it shows.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
