A queen on horseback, hemmed in by soldiers and a hostile crowd, carried up a narrow Edinburgh street past gables and forestairs that no longer exist. It is June 1567, and Mary is being brought back to the capital as a prisoner after her surrender at Carberry Hill.

James Drummond painted it in 1870, and the setting is the point as much as the story. Drummond was an antiquarian who spent his life drawing the Old Town's closes before they were demolished, and he rebuilt sixteenth-century Edinburgh here from his own records. The crowd's insults are historical too: the Edinburgh mob shouted for her death as she passed.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
