A girl stands in a field of kail with a knife in her hand and looks straight back at you. James Guthrie painted her in 1883 at Cockburnspath in Berwickshire.

A hind is not an animal here — it is a job. The word meant a skilled farm servant, and this is his daughter, standing in the cabbage that fed a labouring family through the winter. The other Glasgow Boys went back to the city when the light went. Guthrie stayed the whole winter.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
