Three figures in long grass under fruit trees, painted so loosely at the edges that the orchard is more light than leaf. James Guthrie made it in 1885 and 1886, at the height of the Glasgow Boys' quarrel with the Edinburgh establishment.
They called the Academy's sentimental Highland pictures “gluepots” and painted outdoors instead, in flat square brushstrokes learned from the French naturalist Bastien-Lepage. Guthrie was in his mid-twenties. Within a generation he would be President of the Royal Scottish Academy himself.
Printed to order on heavyweight archival paper with a narrow white border that keeps the painting's own proportions. Framed in black, wood or white, or unframed for your own frame. Shipped worldwide.
