Flat fields, a line of trees, and a sky doing almost nothing — which is the difficult kind. James Guthrie painted at Poppleton in his outdoor years.
The whole point of these pictures is that nothing happens in them. Guthrie had decided that a field in ordinary weather was subject enough, and he painted it in front of the field rather than back in Glasgow from sketches.
It looks easy now because he and the other Glasgow Boys won the argument.
