A roebuck's head and two ptarmigan, laid out on a panel by Edwin Landseer around 1830 — a game larder painted with the seriousness other artists gave to portraits.
The ptarmigan is the giveaway. It lives only on the high tops, turning white in winter, and it fixes this picture in the Scottish hills as surely as a caption would. Landseer made the Highlands a subject he returned to for the rest of his career.
The original oil on panel hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Printed to order on heavyweight archival paper with a narrow white border that keeps the painting's own proportions. Framed in black, wood or white, or unframed for your own frame. Shipped free worldwide.
