A young man alone in a workshop at night, a model engine on the bench in front of him, tools and drawings everywhere, the look on his face of someone who has just understood something. The full title says what: the Dawn of the Nineteenth Century.

James Watt was an instrument maker at Glasgow University when he worked out, on a Sunday walk across Glasgow Green in 1765, how to make the steam engine efficient. James Eckford Lauder painted the moment of thought rather than the walk, ninety years later, in 1855, and the picture became the standard image of Scottish invention. Lauder, born in Edinburgh in 1811, was the younger brother of the painter Robert Scott Lauder.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
