Loch Katrine under a wide grey Trossachs sky, painted by John Lavery with the loose wet handling that made his name before the society portraits took over.

The loch was already famous twice over: Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake turned it into Scotland's first mass tourist destination in 1810, and from 1859 it supplied Glasgow with its drinking water. Lavery was one of the Glasgow Boys, the group who dismissed the Edinburgh establishment's Highland pictures as “gluepots” and painted what was actually in front of them.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
