Ben Lomond under a sky that is still deciding, the loch laid out flat and bright beneath it, and nobody in sight but a few cattle at the water's edge.
Horatio McCulloch did more than any painter to invent the Scotland that visitors expected to find: empty, sublime and lit from behind the hills. He painted it at exactly the moment the glens were being emptied of people for sheep and sporting estates, and the pictures carry that quiet alongside their grandeur. Born in Glasgow in 1805, he spent his career on the lochs north of the city before settling in Edinburgh, where he died in 1867.
