Nasmyth painted this view repeatedly and it is the reason he is called the father of Scottish landscape painting. He was a working Edinburgh man — he designed the Dean Bridge approaches, built stage sets, taught Wilkie and Roberts, and was a friend of Burns — and he painted the city as a piece of engineering as much as a piece of scenery.
