Pink granite, white sand and water the colour of a swimming pool — Iona does actually look like this, which is the first thing people say when they get there.

Peploe painted the north end of the island almost every summer from 1920 until his health gave out. He lodged at the farm at Cùlbhuirg and walked to the same few outlooks year after year, painting the rocks in flat slabs of colour with the drawing left showing through.
