A black bottle, a white cloth and fruit, painted around 1905 with the paint laid on thick and wet and the whole thing finished before it could dry.

This is early Peploe, before the flat colour and the hard edges — the influence here is Manet and the Dutch seventeenth century, and the black is doing the work that colour would do twenty years later. He was in his early thirties and had not yet been to France.
