A prince in a Garter sash, painted in Rome in 1732 for a court that had lost its throne — Charles Edward Stuart, born there and still a boy, already presented as the hope of the exiled Stuarts.
Antonio David was the official painter of the Jacobite court in Rome and worked for the Stuart dynasty for nearly twenty years; copies of his portraits were sent to the family's supporters across Europe. The portrait is proud and cheerful, a picture of high hopes. Those hopes ended at Culloden in 1746, and Charles lived the rest of his life in exile.
The original oil on canvas is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
