A young man in a blue bonnet with a white cockade, the Order of the Garter on his breast — Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the Jacobite claimant remembered as Bonnie Prince Charlie.
The white cockade stands for the white rose, a Jacobite emblem that his troops wore in place of a formal uniform. William Mosman, a painter probably born in Aberdeen who trained in Rome, painted the prince between about 1737 and 1750. Charles's army was defeated at Culloden in 1746, and he spent the rest of his life in exile.
The original oil on canvas is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
