Alastair Ranaldson Macdonell sat for Raeburn around 1812 on a canvas nearly two and a half metres tall. He was a friend of Walter Scott and is thought to have suggested the doomed chieftain Fergus Mac-Ivor in Waverley. The romance and the eviction notices belonged to the same man, and the picture is more interesting for knowing it.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
