A young Ayrshire laird, painted at close range against nothing at all. Henry Raeburn painted Quentin McAdam of Craigengillan around 1800.

Raeburn worked without preliminary drawing, straight onto the canvas with a loaded brush, building the head out of blocks of light. Stand close and the face dissolves into strokes; step back and a specific man is looking at you.

He painted almost everyone who mattered in Enlightenment Edinburgh, and he did it in a city that had no other portrait painter of his rank.

Printed to order on heavyweight archival paper with a narrow white border that keeps the painting's own proportions. Framed in black, wood or white, or unframed for your own frame. Shipped worldwide.
