Three people arranged so naturally that it takes a moment to notice how hard the arrangement is. Henry Raeburn painted the Johnstone group around 1790.

Group portraits defeated most of his contemporaries — too many hands, too many eyelines. Raeburn solves it by lighting one face fully, letting the second turn, and holding the third in half shadow, so the picture has a direction to read in.

He was knighted in 1822 and made King's Limner for Scotland the year after, having spent his whole career refusing to move to London.

Printed to order on heavyweight archival paper with a narrow white border that keeps the painting's own proportions. Framed in black, wood or white, or unframed for your own frame. Shipped worldwide.
