A minister in black, arms folded, gliding across the ice on one leg as if it cost him nothing. It did not: fellow skaters would have recognised the pose as a difficult figure, performed with the composure of a man who learned on frozen Dutch canals.

The Reverend Robert Walker belonged to the Edinburgh Skating Society, by some accounts the first figure-skating club in the world, and sat for this small canvas around 1795. It stayed in his family and was almost unknown until the gallery bought it in 1949 for £525. Since then it has become the most reproduced painting in Scotland, and the subject of a real and still-unresolved argument: in 2005 a curator proposed that it was painted not by Raeburn but by the French émigré Henri-Pierre Danloux. The gallery still catalogues it as Raeburn, and says so with an open mind.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
