A young man in a plain coat, looked at straight on, with the open face of someone who has not yet been told how short his life will be.
Robert Fergusson wrote the poems that taught Burns what Scots verse could do, and died in Edinburgh's bedlam in 1774 at the age of twenty-four. His grave in the Canongate Kirkyard lay unmarked until Burns paid for a headstone himself in 1787, calling him his elder brother in the muse. Alexander Runciman, a friend, painted this small portrait from life, and it is the only likeness of Fergusson that survives.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
