Redcoats and Highlanders strung along a mountain pass, musket smoke drifting into the glen, and the peaks of Kintail standing over the whole affair with complete indifference.
This is the forgotten Jacobite rising: June 1719, when a few hundred Spanish soldiers landed in the west and joined the clans at Glen Shiel, only to be broken by government mortars on the hillside. Peter Tillemans, a Flemish painter working in Britain, made the picture soon afterwards, which makes it the only painting of a Jacobite battle by a contemporary. Among the figures, by tradition, are Lord George Murray, who would command at Culloden a generation later, and Rob Roy MacGregor himself.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
