The Tweed curving under a low sun, the Eildon Hills blue behind, and the ruined abbey held in the middle distance like a thing remembered rather than seen.
Turner was the greatest painter England produced, and he came north for Walter Scott. This watercolour was made for Scott's Provincial Antiquities and Picturesque Scenery of Scotland, the engraved series the two men worked on together in the early 1820s, and it shows the abbey Scott loved most and lived beside at Abbotsford. Turner's Scottish watercolours are tiny things, worked with the point of a brush, which is why they reward being seen larger than life.
The original is in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.
