A girl sitting in long grass with her mind somewhere else entirely. E. A. Walton began it outdoors at Cockburnspath in 1885 and finished it at Helensburgh.

Cockburnspath is the same Berwickshire village where Guthrie painted A Hind's Daughter the year before — the Glasgow Boys went there together and worked the same fields. This was the first time Walton let the figures matter more than the landscape they sit in.

The original hangs in the Scottish National Gallery.
