James Hogg kept sheep in the Ettrick valley, taught himself to write, and became Walter Scott's friend and Edinburgh's licensed wild man. The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, from 1824, baffled his own century and was rediscovered by the next as a masterpiece. Sir John Watson Gordon, who succeeded Raeburn as the city's leading portraitist, painted him around 1830 with the plaid that was both costume and the plain truth.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
