George IV arriving at Holyroodhouse in August 1822 — the first visit by a reigning monarch to Scotland in nearly two hundred years, and the moment tartan became the national costume.
Walter Scott stage-managed the whole fortnight. He put the king in a kilt, summoned the clan chiefs, and effectively invented modern Highland pageantry in a fortnight of theatre. Wilkie was there and spent years on the painting afterwards.
