Scott in his study at Abbotsford, pen in hand and dog at his feet, the armour and the books of his collection around him. He was sixty, ill, and writing to pay off a debt that would have broken most men. He looks tired and entirely himself.
Sir William Allan painted this in 1831, the year before Scott's death, and it is the last serious portrait made from life. The two men were friends: Allan had travelled in Russia and the Caucasus before settling in Edinburgh, and Scott thought him the right painter for Scottish history. Here the novelist who invented historical Scotland sits among the relics he spent his money on, in the house that is still exactly as he left it.
The original hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
